The European Commission has gone to war against the Ringtones industry. Twenty sites based in Ireland were shut down because the commission felt that these sites were targeting young children into believing that for one fixed price, they would get these downloads when, in fact, they were being signed up for extensive contracts that cost a tremendous amount of money.
These WAP Ringtones are dangerous for people because there is so much hidden print that people don't read when they sign up. This is a multi-million dollar market, making over 631 million pounds last year alone. It is dangerous then for the governments not to take this as a heavy matter.
Whether or not this will do any damage to the ringtone market, though, no one really knows. People want their ringtones and they are going to continue signing up for these offers that is going to cost them a ton of money. People want their backgrounds and the songs that play. People want A Mili Ringtone. In the end, whether the European Commission can stop these sites or not is of little consequence because somewhere else, another one of these sites will pop up. And on the web, you can find anything anywhere.
